How to Add Links

Sep 1Features

Overview

Links let you connect a topic in your map directly to a web page or other online resource. They are useful for keeping sources, reference materials, project resources, and useful websites close to the ideas they support.

When you add a link, it stays associated with the topic. You can open the link from the topic and edit or remove it later if needed.

Add a link to a topic

To add a link:

  1. Select the topic where you want to add the link.
  2. Click the Create link icon in the topic menu.
  3. Type or paste the link.
  4. Click Apply.

The link is now associated with the selected topic.

For faster access, select a topic and press Shift + Ctrl + U on Windows or Shift + Command + U on Mac to add or edit its link.

Open a link

When a topic has a link, hover over the topic to access it. You can then open the linked page without displaying the full URL as the topic text.

This keeps your map easy to scan while giving you quick access to related online information.

Edit a link

If you need to change where a topic links:

  1. Hover over the topic that contains the link.
  2. Click the Edit link icon.
  3. Type or paste the new link.
  4. Apply your changes.

The topic will now point to the updated destination.

Remove a link

If you no longer need a link:

  1. Hover over the topic that contains the link.
  2. Click the Remove link icon.

The link is removed, but the topic and its text remain in your map.

Example use cases

Links are useful whenever an idea in your map relates to information available online. You can use them to:

  • Connect research topics to sources and reference materials.
  • Link study topics to articles, videos, or learning resources.
  • Keep project tasks connected to relevant online documents or tools.
  • Add useful websites to lesson plans.
  • Connect planning topics to forms, schedules, or other online resources.

For example, when creating a research map, you can add a link to the source associated with each topic. This keeps your map focused on the main ideas while making supporting resources easy to access.

Tips

  • Add links to the topics they relate to most closely so you can find them easily later.
  • Use clear topic titles so you can understand what a link is for without opening it.
  • Update links when an online resource moves to a different address.
  • Remove outdated links when you no longer need the resource.
  • Use file attachments when you want to keep a file directly associated with a topic instead of linking to an online resource.

Common questions

What happens to a link if I move the topic?

The link stays associated with the topic when you move or rearrange it. You can reorganize your map without having to add the link again.

Can I add links inside my notes too?

Yes. Open the topic’s note, select the text you want to link, and click the Insert link icon. Enter the URL, then confirm to add the link to the selected text.

Can I add more than one link to the same topic?

No. A topic can have one associated link at a time. If you need to keep several links together, you can add them to the topic’s notes instead.

Keep online resources connected to your ideas

Add links to topics when you want useful online resources within easy reach of the ideas they support. Try adding a link to a topic in an existing map, or start with a blank map and connect resources as you organize your ideas.
