How to Add Notes

Aug 28Features

Overview

Notes let you keep detailed information with a topic without adding everything directly to the map. This helps keep your map easy to scan while giving you space for explanations, research, reminders, instructions, and other supporting information.

Each note is connected to a topic. You can format notes, add links, search notes across the map, and export your notes when you need to use them outside Mindmup.

Add a note to a topic

To add a note:

  1. Select the topic where you want to add the note.
  2. Click the Notes icon in the topic menu. The Notes panel opens.
  3. Add your note in the panel.

For faster access, select a topic and press N to open its notes.

You can also open the Notes panel using the Notes icon in the top-right corner of the editor.

Format a note

Use formatting to organize longer notes and make important information easier to scan.

When editing a note, you can use:

  • Heading 1 for main sections within a note.
  • Heading 2 for smaller sections under a main heading.
  • Bold to emphasize important words or information.
  • Italic to give text additional emphasis.
  • Underline to make specific text stand out.
  • Strikethrough to mark information that is no longer relevant without removing it.
  • Bulleted list to organize related points without a particular order.
  • Numbered list for steps, sequences, or information that follows an order.

You can also add links to your notes. Click the Insert link icon, enter the URL, then confirm to add it.

For example, a research note might use headings to separate different areas of a topic, bullet points for key findings, and links to keep relevant sources with the information.

Search notes

As your map grows, you can search your notes to quickly find information stored across different topics.

  1. Open the Notes panel.
  2. Click Search notes.
  3. Enter what you want to find.

This is useful for maps with detailed research, study material, meeting notes, or project information spread across multiple topics.

Delete a note

To remove a note:

  • Open the note you want to delete.
  • Click the three-dot Actions menu.
  • Select Delete note.
  • Confirm the deletion.

Example use cases

Notes are useful when information belongs with a topic but does not need to appear directly on the map.

You can use notes to:

  • Add definitions and explanations to a study guide.
  • Keep research details and source links with an idea.
  • Add instructions or background information to project tasks.
  • Record additional details from a meeting or brainstorming session.
  • Keep talking points with topics you plan to discuss or present.

For example, a student can use short topic titles for important concepts and keep definitions, examples, and supporting information in notes. This keeps the main map easy to review without losing the details needed for studying.

Tips

  • Keep topic text focused on the main idea and use notes for supporting details.
  • Break longer notes into sections with headings, lists, and other formatting.
  • Add relevant links directly to notes so supporting resources stay connected to the topic.
  • Use the Notes panel when you are working with notes across several topics in the same map.
  • If you plan to use your notes in another document, export them instead of copying each note individually.

Common questions

Can I export notes from my map?

Yes. Mindmup lets you export notes as Microsoft Word, Text/Markdown, or HTML. You can use topic titles as headings or export just the notes without headings.

Can I export an outline that includes my notes?

Yes. When exporting a map as an outline, you can choose to include notes. This is useful when you want both the structure of your map and the supporting information stored in your notes.

Add more detail without cluttering your map

Use notes when you need more room for information but want to keep the main map clear and easy to scan. Try adding a note to a topic in a map you are already working on, or start with a blank map and use notes to keep supporting details alongside your ideas.
