How to Export a Map as an Image

Aug 19Features

Overview

Exporting a map as an image creates a visual copy of your Mindmup map that you can save, share, add to a document, or use in a presentation.

Mindmup supports PNG, JPG, and SVG image exports. Depending on the format you choose, you can also adjust settings such as the background, size, or image quality before exporting.

Export a map as an image

You can start the export from the Home dashboard or from an open map.

From the Home dashboard, click the Actions (three-dot) menu next to the map and select Export. If the map is already open, click the Mindmup icon in the top-left corner, then select File › Export.

  1. Select PNG, JPG, or SVG.
  2. Choose the available export settings for the selected image format.
  3. Click Export.

Export as PNG

Choose PNG when you want a standard image format that works well in documents, presentations, and websites.

You can choose Same as map, Transparent, or White for the background. You can also select Optimized or High resolution for the image quality.

Export as JPG

Choose JPG when you want a widely supported image format for sharing or inserting into documents and presentations.

You can select Optimized or High resolution for the image quality.

Export as SVG

Choose SVG when you want a scalable image that can be resized without losing sharpness.

You can choose Same as map, Transparent, or White for the background. You can also set the size to Fit to map, Small, Medium, Large, or Extra large.

Example use cases

  • Exporting a map as an image is useful when you want to:
  • Add a mind map to a presentation.
  • Insert a map into a document or report.
  • Share a visual copy of a map with others.
  • Use a map as an image on a website or other digital content.
  • Create an image copy of a finished diagram or brainstorming session.

Tips

  • Review your map before exporting and make sure topics, connections, images, and other elements appear as expected.
  • Check the map's layout and styling first. The exported image reflects how your map is currently presented.
  • If the exported image is difficult to read, consider simplifying crowded areas or adjusting the map layout before exporting again.
  • Think about where the image will be used when choosing the export settings. A map for a presentation may need different settings from one intended for a website or document.
  • If the background does not appear as expected, try another available background option and export the map again.
  • Keep the original Mindmup map if you expect to make changes later. You can edit the map and export a new image whenever needed.

Common questions

Should I export my map as an image or PDF?

Export as an image when you want to use your map in a presentation, document, website, or other visual content. Export as PDF when you want a document that is convenient for sharing or printing.

Can I edit the map after exporting it as an image?

Yes. Exporting does not prevent you from continuing to work on the original map. Make your changes in Mindmup, then export the map again when you need an updated image.

Why does my exported image look different from my map?

Check the export settings you selected, particularly the background, image quality, or size options available for the chosen format. If the problem involves the background, see Image Export Background Problems.

What should I do if parts of my map are difficult to read in the exported image?

Review the map's layout and styling before exporting again. Adjust crowded areas or other visual elements in the original map to improve readability in the exported image.
