Overview
As your map develops, you may need to reorganize existing topics without creating them again. Mindmup lets you move and rearrange topics, change their place in the map hierarchy, and copy or paste content where you need it.
You can drag topics to reorganize the map, nest a topic under another topic, or use Cut, Copy, and Paste to move or duplicate content. Mindmup also provides options for controlling whether pasted content becomes a root or child topic.
Move or rearrange a topic
To change where a topic appears in your map, drag it to the new position.
You can also select a topic and press Ctrl + Up Arrow or Ctrl + Down Arrow to move it up or down.
Nest a topic under another topic
Nesting changes the hierarchy of your map by making one topic a child of another.
Drag the topic you want to move onto the topic that should become its parent. Drop it in place to nest it under that topic.
This is useful when an idea belongs under a different section of your map.
Copy and paste a topic
Use copy and paste when you want to duplicate a topic instead of moving the original.
- Select the topic you want to copy.
- Press Ctrl + C to copy it.
- Select the topic where you want to paste.
- Press Ctrl + V to paste it.
Cut and paste a topic
Use cut and paste when you want to move content rather than create another copy.
- Select the topic you want to move.
- Press Ctrl + X to cut it.
- Select where you want to place it.
- Press Ctrl + V to paste it.
Mindmup provides Paste behavior options that let you paste content as a root node or as a child node. Click the Mindmup icon > Edit › Paste behavior, then choose Paste as root node or Paste as child node.
Detach a topic
You can detach a topic when you no longer want it nested under its current parent.
Right-click the topic and select Detach node. You can also select the topic and press D.
Example use cases
You can reorganize topics to:
- Move an idea to a more appropriate section of the map.
- Change the order of tasks or steps.
- Nest related information under a common topic.
- Move an existing branch when the structure of your map changes.
- Duplicate content that you need in another part of the map.
- Detach a topic when it should no longer belong to its current branch.
Tips
- Drag topics when you want to reorganize your map visually.
- Drop a topic onto another topic when you want to make it a child of that topic.
- Use Ctrl + Up Arrow and Ctrl + Down Arrow for quick rearranging with the keyboard.
- Use Copy when you want to keep the original topic and create another copy.
- Use Cut when you want to move content without keeping the original in its current location.
- Check Edit › Paste behavior when you want to control whether pasted content becomes a root node or child node.
Common questions
What if I move a topic to the wrong place?
Use Undo to reverse your last change. Press Ctrl + Z, or click the Undo button in the bottom-right corner.
Can I move more than one topic at a time?
Mindmup supports selecting multiple topics, including siblings and subtrees. Once selected, you can work with the group together.
Can I copy the formatting from one topic to another without copying the topic?
Yes. Mindmup provides Copy style and Paste style for copying a topic's style separately from its content. You can also use Ctrl + Alt + C to copy a style and Ctrl + Alt + V to paste it.
