Overview
Selecting topics lets you work with one or more parts of your map at the same time. You can select an individual topic, several related topics, all siblings, an entire subtree, or every topic in the map.
This is useful when you want to apply the same action to multiple topics without working with each one individually.
Select a single topic
Click a topic to select it.
You can also use the Arrow keys to move the selection to a topic above, below, left, or right of the currently selected topic.
Select multiple topics
To add nearby topics to your current selection, hold Shift and use the Arrow keys.
Continue using Shift + Arrow keys to add more topics to the selection.
Select related topics
Mindmup provides several options for quickly selecting groups of related topics.
- Click the Mindmup icon.
- Click Edit > Select.
- Choose Subtree, Children, or Siblings, depending on the topics you want to select.
Use Subtree when you want to select the current topic and the topics below it. Use Children to select its child topics, or Siblings to select topics that share the same parent.
Select all topics
Click the Mindmup icon > Edit > Select > Select all to select all topics in the map.
Keyboard shortcut: Press Ctrl + A on Windows or Cmd + A on Mac.
Clear the selection
Click the Mindmup icon > Edit > Select > Clear selection when you no longer want the topics selected.
Keyboard shortcut: Press Esc to clear the selection.
Example use cases
Selecting multiple topics is useful when you want to:
- Work with several sibling topics together.
- Select a branch of your map without selecting unrelated topics.
- Apply an action to all topics in a map.
- Work with the children of a particular topic.
- Quickly select topics at the same level of the map.
Tips
- Use Shift + Arrow keys when you want to build a selection using the keyboard.
- Press { to select the current topic and its entire subtree.
- Press [ to select the subtree below the current topic without selecting the current topic itself.
- Press = to select all siblings of the current topic.
- Press . to cancel a multi-selection and keep only the current topic selected.
- You can also use the number keys 0–9 to select all topics at a particular level of the map.
Common questions
What can I do after selecting multiple topics?
Once multiple topics are selected, you can apply supported actions to the selection instead of working with each topic individually. This can make it faster to manage groups of related topics.
Why would I select a subtree instead of the entire map?
Selecting a subtree is useful when you only want to work with one branch of a larger map. It lets you focus your action on that section without selecting unrelated topics elsewhere in the map.
