Add Custom Connections Between Nodes in Mindmup
Mindmup lets you create custom connections between nodes that aren’t directly related. This is useful when you want to show relationships, references, or dependencies that go beyond the main map structure.
Connect nodes using the floating toolbar
- Click the node you want to use as the starting point.
- In the floating toolbar, select the Connect to another node icon.
- Click the destination node to complete the connection.
This creates a direct link between the two nodes without changing the main hierarchy.

Use keyboard shortcuts
A faster option is to use a keyboard shortcut:
- Select the starting node.
- Hold Alt (Option on Mac) and click the destination node to create the connection.
- To remove the connection, hold Alt (Option on Mac) and click the destination node again.
Customize the connection
Click on an existing connection to adjust how it looks. You can:
- Change the color
- Modify the line style
- Add or remove an arrow pointer
These options make it easier to visually distinguish different types of relationships in your map.
