Moving Collaboration from Google Drive to Mindmup Cloud

Dec 22News

Changes to Google Drive real-time collaboration

Google announced that it would discontinue Realtime API support for Google Drive files used by third-party apps like Mindmup. This change meant that users would eventually need to choose between storing maps on Google Drive or continuing to use real-time collaborative editing.

To address this, Mindmup introduced a built-in alternative with safe concurrent editing and collaboration, hosted directly in Mindmup. This removed the dependency on Google Drive for collaboration while keeping the editing experience smooth and reliable.

Collaboration in Mindmup

With this update:

  • Users can collaborate on maps stored directly in Mindmup.
  • Maps can be shared privately with other Mindmup users.
  • Organization users can create both private maps and team maps shared across their organization.

This collaboration service continues to improve over time, with a focus on stability, performance, and ease of sharing.

If you were previously storing maps on Google Drive, you can switch to editing maps directly in Mindmup by opening the Mindmup app instead of the Google Drive version. You can still sign in using your Google account.

What Google Workspace administrators should know

For users saving maps to Google Drive, and for administrators managing Google Workspace accounts, this change required reviewing how maps are stored and shared going forward. Key actions may be needed depending on how your organization previously used Google Drive–based maps.

Privacy and data handling

As part of this change, Mindmup now stores additional user metadata when signing in through third-party providers. This is required for auditing and collaboration features.

  • No new data is requested from users.
  • No additional permissions are required.
  • Only information already approved by users or administrators is stored.

The Privacy Policy has been updated to reflect this change. If you have questions, contact us at contact@mindmup.com.
