Key Differences Between Legacy Mindmup and Mindmup 2

This article highlights the main differences between the legacy version of Mindmup and Mindmup 2, focusing on map content, the user interface, exporting options, and Google Drive integration.

Map Content

Mindmup 2 offers several improvements to how maps look and work:

  • You can choose from multiple visual themes, including top-down orientation and straight-line connectors. In legacy Mindmup, straight lines were only available through an extension and worked only on screen. In Mindmup 2, visual themes work consistently on screen and when exporting to PDFs, images, and Mindmup atlases.
  • There are two types of attachments:
  • You can create maps with multiple roots and disconnected (floating) nodes. This makes it easier to brainstorm freely first, then organize ideas into a clear hierarchy later.

User Interface

Mindmup 2 is designed to be faster and easier to use, especially on touch devices:

  • All key operations are available on a fixed top toolbar, so you no longer need to move a floating toolbar around.
  • Icons have been redesigned to be more intuitive and touch-friendly.
  • Sidebar operations, such as working with Present Mode or measurements, now add icons to the toolbar for easier access on touch devices.
  • Full-screen mode removes visual clutter so you can focus on your map. Use View › Full Screen to quickly maximize your workspace.

Exporting and Converting Maps

Mindmup 2 adds more flexible export and conversion options:

  • Create document outlines from your maps, including HTML, Word or Google Docs, Markdown, and plain text.
  • Generate document drafts by exporting notes with headings into text documents, including Word or Google Docs.
  • PDF exports now fully support all visual features you see on screen.
  • Export maps as SVG images for high-quality scaling.

Google Drive Integration Changes

Mindmup 2 for Google Drive includes several important improvements over the legacy version:

  • Maps stored in Google Drive are automatically saved, similar to other Google Apps documents.
  • You can manage maps directly from the Google Drive web interface, including moving them between folders and creating maps inside folders. Maps created in a folder automatically inherit the folder’s sharing settings.
  • You can sign in to multiple Google accounts in the same browser profile and switch between them easily. The legacy Mindmup app did not handle multiple signed-in accounts well.
  • Organizations using Google Workspace can enable Mindmup services across their domain.
  • You can attach documents from Google Drive directly to maps.
  • You can include images and photos from Google Photos in your maps.
  • Mindmup maps appear with thumbnails in Google Drive, making it easier to preview content when managing files.
