Troubleshooting network and access issues in Mindmup
Mindmup runs directly in your browser and connects to third-party services like Google Drive. Because of that, browser settings, extensions, or privacy tools can sometimes interfere.
If you’re seeing network errors but your connection seems fine, the steps below usually help resolve the issue.
Problems signing in
Are you using an ad blocker or privacy extension?
Many content blockers prevent access to third-party authorization systems.
If you sign in with Google, make sure Mindmup is whitelisted in your ad blocker or privacy extension.
Have you blocked third-party cookies?
When Google authenticates you, it’s treated as a third party by the browser. If third-party cookies are blocked, Mindmup can’t complete the sign-in process.
To fix this:
- Allow third-party cookies, or
- Whitelist cookies from accounts.google.com
Check your browser’s cookie settings for Chrome or Firefox if you’re unsure.
Are you using Disconnect, Ghostery, Privacy Badger, or similar extensions?
These tools block outgoing requests by design, which can prevent Google authentication and Google Drive access.
To use Google services with Mindmup, whitelist the relevant domains or requests. Refer to your extension’s documentation for exact steps.
Trying to access Mindmup from the Drive mobile app?
The Drive mobile app blocks certain embedded web features for security reasons.
Instead, open your browser and go directly to drive.mindmup.com using Chrome or Safari on your mobile device.
Using Internet Explorer?
Mindmup does not support Internet Explorer. Please use the latest version of Chrome, Firefox, or Safari.
Using the stock Android browser?
Mindmup does not support the default Android browser. Use Chrome on Android instead.
Problems accessing or exporting a map
Was the map created by someone else?
If the map is stored on Google Drive, having a link is not enough. The owner must explicitly grant you access.
Ask them to share the file with your Google account.
Is the map on Google Drive?
Sometimes Google Drive resets file permissions, which can block Mindmup from opening the map.
To fix this:
- Open Google Drive in your browser.
- Right-click the map file.
- Select Open with › Mindmup.
Using Internet Explorer?
Mindmup is tested on recent versions of Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. Older or unsupported browsers may cause features to fail, especially Google Drive access.
If you’re using IE or an outdated browser, switch to a supported one.
Are you using Disconnect, Ghostery, Privacy Badger, or similar extensions?
These extensions can block access to Google Drive and Google authentication.
Whitelist the required domains or temporarily disable the extension to test whether it’s causing the issue.
Are you using an ad blocker?
Some ad blockers mistakenly block Google service requests.
To test this:
- Open Mindmup in a private or incognito window.
- Check if the issue still occurs.
If that fixes it, whitelist Google Drive or Mindmup in your ad blocker.
Starter map limitations
Maps created on the Starter plan are now:
- Private
- Non-expiring
- Limited to up to 5 editable maps
If you’ve reached the limit, you’ll need to delete an existing map or upgrade your plan to continue editing.
