Overview
Exporting notes lets you take the information stored in your Mindmup topic notes and use it outside the map. This is useful when your notes contain detailed research, meeting information, study material, or other content that you want to work with separately.
Mindmup can export notes as Microsoft Word, Text/Markdown, or HTML. You can also choose whether to use your node titles as headings or export just the notes without headings.
Export notes from a map
You can start the export from the Home dashboard or from an open map.
From the Home dashboard, click the Actions (three-dot) menu next to the map and select Export. If the map is already open, click the Mindmup icon in the top-left corner, then select File › Export.
- Select Notes.
- Under Format, choose Microsoft Word, Text/Markdown, or HTML.
- Under Include headings, choose Use node titles as headings or Just the notes no headings.
- Click Export.
Choose whether to include headings
Select Use node titles as headings when you want the titles of your map topics to provide structure and context for the exported notes.
Select Just the notes no headings when you only want the content of your notes without the corresponding node titles.
Example use cases
Exporting notes can be useful when you want to:
- Turn study notes into a document for review.
- Use research collected in a mind map for a writing project.
- Export meeting notes for use outside Mindmup.
- Create a document from detailed information attached to your topics.
- Move notes into another application for further editing or formatting.
Tips
- Choose Microsoft Word when you want to continue editing or formatting your notes in a document.
- Choose Text/Markdown when you want a text-based version that can be used with Markdown-compatible applications.
- Choose HTML when you need the notes in a web-compatible format.
- Use Use node titles as headings when the topic names provide important context for understanding the notes.
- Choose Just the notes no headings when the notes make sense on their own and you do not need the map's topic titles.
- Review your topic titles and notes before exporting so the finished document contains the information you need.
Common questions
What's the difference between exporting notes and exporting an outline?
Notes export focuses on the information stored in your topic notes. Outline export is designed to export the structure and hierarchy of the topics in your map and provides different formatting and structure options.
Can I use my exported notes in another application?
Yes. Choose the format based on where you want to continue working with your notes. Use Microsoft Word for word-processing applications, Text/Markdown for Markdown-compatible editors and text-based workflows, or HTML for applications and web tools that support HTML files.
After exporting, you can open or import the file into a compatible application to continue working with the content.
Does exporting notes change my map?
Exporting creates a separate file from your notes. It does not change the notes or topics in your Mindmup map.
