Overview
Mindmup automatically arranges your map to keep the structure clear and readable. Sometimes a map may still look too spread out, too crowded, or different from what you expected.
You can adjust the layout and style settings, or reset the position of an individual node if it looks out of place.
If your map looks too spread out or crowded
Start by checking the layout settings:
- Click the Customize layout & style icon in the top-left corner.
- Open Layout.
- Check the selected Map type, Map direction, and Map style.
- Choose the settings that best fit your map.
If a node looks out of place
You can reset the position of an individual node.
- Right-click the node.
- Choose Reset node position.
Mindmup will return the node to its calculated position.
If the map direction looks unexpected
Check the Map direction under Customize layout & style.
The available options depend on the map type:
- Standard mindmaps and Argument Visualization maps use the default direction.
- Org Charts support Top-down and Bottom-up.
If the map looks different after changing its style
Your selected map style affects how the map is displayed.
Open Customize layout & style and check Map style.
Standard mindmaps support Bubble, Simple, and Productive styles. Org Charts support Bubble and Simple. Argument Visualization maps support Standard and High-impact.
If the styling looks inconsistent
Righ-click anywhere in the canvas and choose Reset all styling.
This can help when changes to colors, text, shapes, or lines make the map difficult to read.
Tips
- Check Customize layout & style when the overall arrangement looks wrong.
- Use Reset node position when only one node is out of place.
- Check the map direction when the structure is oriented unexpectedly.
- Check the map style when the map's overall appearance has changed.
- Use Reset all styling when several styling changes have made the map difficult to read.

If your map does not look the way you expect, start with Customize layout & style and check the layout settings. For an individual node that looks out of place, Reset node position can quickly restore its position.
Try these options on an existing map, or create a blank map and experiment with different layouts and styles.
