Overview
If you can open a shared map but cannot make changes, you may only have view access. The access level assigned to you depends on how the map was shared.
Mindmup supports Can view and Can edit access for direct and link sharing. Maps shared with a team use the team member's team permission.
Check your access
The map was shared directly with you
Ask the map owner to open Share and check Shared with. Your account should have Can edit access to make changes.
If your access is Can view, you can open the map but cannot edit it.
The map was shared with a team
Your access to a map shared with a team comes from your team permission:
- Can view: You can view the team's maps but cannot edit them.
- Can edit: You can view and edit the team's maps.
- Admin: You can manage the team's members, roles, and maps.
Ask the team administrator to check your team membership if you only have view access.
The map was shared with a link
The owner can set General access to Anyone with the link and choose Can view or Can edit.
If Can view is selected, the link gives you access to the map but does not allow you to make changes. Ask the owner to change the access to Can edit if you need editing access.
The map uses a Guest Pass
A Guest Pass can be configured for Anyone can view or Anyone can edit. It can also be limited to one hour or one day.
If the Guest Pass only allows viewing, the owner needs to change its access to Anyone can edit.
If you already have edit access
If the owner confirms that you have Can edit access but the map still cannot be edited, check whether the access level shown in the map's sharing settings matches the account you are currently using.
For team-shared maps, also confirm that you are using the account assigned to the team.
If the correct permission is already in place and you still cannot edit the map, contact Mindmup support at contact@mindmup.com and describe what happens when you try to make a change.
Example use cases
Permission issues commonly come up when:
- A map owner shared it with you as Can view instead of Can edit.
- You can edit maps in one team but only view maps in another.
- A shared link was created with view-only access.
- A Guest Pass was set to allow viewing rather than editing.
Common questions
Can I change my own access from Can view to Can edit?
No. Your access level is determined by how the map was shared or by your team permission. The owner or appropriate team administrator needs to change it.
Does my account role determine whether I can edit a team map?
No. Your account role controls what you can do across the overall account, while your team role controls what you can do within a specific team. For maps shared with a team or created within that team, your team role determines whether you can view or edit them.
Why can I edit a map in one team but not another?
Team permissions are assigned separately for each team. You can have different permissions in different teams.
Who can change my team permission?
A Team Admin can manage the team's members and roles.

Being able to open a map does not always mean you can edit it. Check the sharing permission or team role assigned to you, then ask the map owner or Team Admin to update your access when needed. Once you have edit access, you can continue working on the map.
